ENTRE HISTOIRE ET MODERNITÉ
A l'époque, le tissu était lourd, rêche et rugueux, idéal pour les vêtements de travail, le cordage et le voilage. Ce manque de finesse qui confère au chanvre sa célèbre résistance a entraîné une baisse de l’utilisation du chanvre dans le textile au XIX° siècle.
En 1935, le nylon est breveté aux Etats-Unis : l’industrie textile du chanvre périclite face à l’hégémonie du coton britannique et du nylon américain largement subventionnés. En pleine Guerre Froide, les pays du bloc soviétique comme la Pologne et la Roumanie conserveront leur savoir- faire dans la production du chanvre textile.
La France est aujourd'hui le deuxième producteur mondial de chanvre mais les débouchés textile du chanvre français sont encore limités et la filière est à reconstruire. En adhérant à l’association Lin et Chanvre Bio (Normandie) et en s’associant à la coopérative de chanvre VirgoCoop (Lot), nous participons activement aux essais de R&D pour obtenir un tissu de chanvre local.
